News: Rabies fears grow as Malamute litter ‘enters UK from Bulgaria’

This article has 11 Comment(s)

A TWO-month-old Alaskan Malamute is in quarantine after allegedly coming into Dover from Bulgaria – where rabies is endemic – with no pet passport. The puppy was one of a litter of five bought by English residents from a van parked in a lay-by. The illegal landing of the Malamute came to light because his new owner – who bought him through a website and was told he was 16 weeks old – took him to a vet who discovered that the papers accompanying him were a sham.

* Manchester 2012: That makes three for Peek A Boo

There have been only two all-breeds championship shows this year and Jilly has topped them both! As at Boston two weeks earlier, the top award at Manchester went to Sara Robertson’s Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Ch Soletrader Peek A Boo, with husband Gavin handling. Judge was Ann Arch. In all this is her third such award, as she also won at Paignton last year.

* Petplan Junior Stakes Final 2012: Jean-Paul wins the final final

WHEN IT began in the early 1990s the Petplan junior stakes final quickly established itself as something distinctive. In those days the Pup of the Year and champions/veterans finals were familiar and popular events, so how could this new addition to the stakes finals be different?

This week's talking point

Should judges from overseas automatically be approved by the Kennel Club to award CCs in breeds for which they are passed in their own country?

You can have your say too! We'd love you to get involved.Click here to post a comment

Yorker, they could not make any more of a mess than some of the UK judges do, breed specialists and all rounders alike! Shows desperately need to bring back the incentive to make us enter and if the KC are going to sit there and do nothing (like a CH class and CC's for every breed at every Ch show like the continent where entries are increasing greatly) then overseas judges are a way forward.

In theory 'Yes' but if they make a mess of it, please don't invite them back.

Speaking to FCI / overseas judges they all make the point of confirming they throughly familiarise themselves with the UK standards of the breeds they are invited to judge here. As for teeth, yes (and I have not gone through every FCI standard for every breed) most breeds under FCI rules are penalised for missing teeth. Some countries are "hotter" on this than others. However at least the overseas judges when judging in the UK look in the mouth! We have had 3 UK all rounders in the past 10 months (on the ladder grabbing breeds under their belts), awarding CC's in the breed for the first time and NOT ONE has made more than a lightning quick peek at the incisors. 2 of them did not even check bite at all on the majority of exhibits.
