THE FIRST weekend in October played host to the Irish Kennel Club’s international weekend at the National Show Centre in Dublin, the venue for the two back-to-back shows.
They were sponsored as usual by Gain Pet Foods, with their team of Sean Martin, Jim Treacy, Ciara Watt and Rob O’Sullivan and headed by MD John Fox, representing the company in the photographs.
With the added attraction of CACIBs on offer, the shows were well supported on both days, 1,625 dogs on day one with slightly fewer, 1,560 dogs, entered on the second day, both figures enhanced by further numbers taking part in the obedience and agility events.
The truly international panel was made up from judges who had travelled to Dublin from around the world and all seemed to enjoy their appointment, some on a first visit to Ireland. They were greeted by a sunny weekend which thankfully facilitated the use of outdoor rings in addition to the many breeds who were accommodated inside the NSC.
With judging starting at 9am, the first day was rather long, the extra demands of an international event taking their toll, and judging was not completed until 6.30pm. But the second day, lessons learned, was much slicker with judging finished by 5.15pm.
We now look forward to the IKC events planned for next year with a return to international status for the Celtic Winners show in March, on the Saturday after Crufts; let’s hope that many Continental exhibitors will take advantage of this, stay over after Crufts and take in the show.
