The 81st Dun Laoghaire Canine Society all-breed championship show was held at the Irish Kennel Club’s National Show Centre at Cloghran on the Sunday of the August bank holiday weekend; known better as the Monkstown show, paying service to its original roots in the outreaches of Dublin city, its home is now very much on the other side of the city.
After a brief flirtation with international status, the show reverted to a national event a number of years ago and is a long established date on the canine calendar. Sponsored by Happy Dog with Jackie and Andrea Stubbs and Davy Bleakley on the stand and in the photographs, the show had an entry of 1,065 dogs for the mostly Irish panel of judges, supplemented by a further 85 entered in the agility and obedience disciplines.
A rather overcast day greeted us on arrival, and around lunchtime the rain arrived but thankfully didn’t stay, so the use of the indoor facilities for some breed judging and all the stakes and groups was very welcome, especially given the rather windy conditions that prevailed for most of the day.
Monkstown had a new secretary in situ this year, Ger Philpott, who together with his team, got the groups underway at a good time in the early afternoon and with pre-judging in most groups, everything was wrapped up by 5.30pm.
