THE LAST weekend in June saw the canine bandwagon head south, initially to the midlands for Kilkenny championship show and then on down to the coastal south east for Deise championship show.
There was a new venue for Kilkenny’s 42nd all-breed show, a Rod Stewart concert at St James Park in the city taking precedence over the dog show. St Patricks Hurling Club at Ballyragget on the outskirts proved a more than agreeable replacement, indeed the canine club is hopeful that the venue may become a permanent replacement in years to come.
Headed by secretary Anita Foley Duggan, with Fionnuala Malone as the new show manager, the show was efficiently managed. With an entry of almost 1,100 dogs, a good entry in these crowded calendar days, it was over by 5pm, allowing the football supporters among us to catch up with the Northern Ireland versus Wales game at Euro ‘16.
Sponsored by Happy Dog with Andrea and Jackie Stubbs representing the company in the photographs, the Kilkenny show had a number of visiting judges, supplemented by Irish judges, including a first-time best in show judge.
Thankfully the weather was rather kind; the slight drizzle at the start of the day relented and gave us yet another pleasant, if rather chilly, day in Kilkenny and we look forward to more of the same for 2017.
