DESPITE the disappointing result for Northern Ireland the previous night at the Euros, there was renewed hope that perhaps the Republic of Ireland team might go one better as they prepared to take on France on the Sunday. The committee of Deise Canine Club made sure that we would not miss out on the action by arranging to have the match screened in the bar during the day.
Meanwhile, the club had a more pressing undertaking, that of hosting its tenth anniversary championship show at the racecourse in the holiday town of Tramore with its stunning views over the south eastern coastline, its home since the inaugural show in 2007.
Unfortunately, it seems Deise was paying the penalty for the surfeit of ‘back-to-back’ shows over recent times with an entry of just under 900 dogs, disappointing for secretary Elaine Butler and her committee and also for the mostly Irish-based judging panel, supplemented with some visiting judges who had travelled on from Kilkenny.
It was a busy weekend also for the sponsor, Happy Dog, with Jackie and Andrea Stubbs once again representing the company in the photographs.
Despite a wet journey down from Kilkenny, thankfully the weather cleared by the start of judging; indeed the sun made a most welcome appearance during the day giving us a fine end at 4.30pm to Deise’s tenth birthday celebrations.
