Dog World Competitions
TOP DOGS is the definitive indicator of which dogs are in the lead in the show ring and to achieve the title of Top Dog all breeds for the year is an exceptional achievement, rivalling the award of best-in-show at Crufts as the most sought after success in the sport.
Dog World introduced the competition in 1973 and it has been sponsored generously ever since by Pedigree Masterfoods, who provide trophies for the annual breed, group and overall leaders.
Run on a points system, it takes into account wins at championship shows throughout the year, both at breed level and in the group and best-in-show rings. Annual winners in each breed have the chance to advertise in the Best of British Dogs supplement, published in Crufts week.
TOP STUD DOGS
TOP STUD DOGS was inaugurated in 1982 and recognised those dogs which consistently sire top quality stock capable of winning at challenge certificate level. It is supported by Royal Canin, who provide trophies for the annual winners who again have the chance to be featured in the Best of British Dogs supplement.
TOP BROOD BITCHES
TOP BROOD BITCHES is run on similar lines for the competition for stud dogs and again recognises those dams who are capable of producing CC-winning progeny. The prizes for this competition are sponsored by Overhill Kennels and Exports, and once again the annual winners may appear in the Best of British Dogs supplement.
The Dog World/Pro Plan PUP OF THE YEAR competition is run on different lines, puppies competing in stakes classes held at all-breed and national group championship shows throughout the year. One puppy from each show is chosen to go forward to a grand final in January.
PUP OF THE YEAR
The competition was started in 1971, with Dog World becoming involved two years later. The qualifying classes regularly draw huge entries and it is a considerable feat to qualify for the final which each year is a showcase for the best young stock seen in the British show rings.
