LOCAL campaigners, MPs and representatives of local authorities have been rewarded for their efforts to uphold the rights of dog walkers in 2009. At the KC Dog awards ceremony on Friday of last week, the winners of four categories were announced. They were – campaigner of the Year, Southend Dog Owners’ Group; local authority award, Chesterfield Borough Council Streetscene team; KC Dog recognition award, Falkirk Council’s ‘Green Dog Walkers’; KC Dog MP award, Andrew George.

The KC’s events and education executive Vanessa McAlpine is a member of the Southend group, and she brought along her Great Dane Tara.
“At a time when councils nationwide are introducing dog control orders, the Kennel Club’s KC Dog awards recognise all responsible dog owners, campaigners and general good citizens who show that if authorities and responsible dog owners work together, sensible local laws can be introduced,” said KC chairman Ronnie Irving.
“Access to walking areas has been in the spotlight through the Marine and Coastal Access Act, and we are highlighting the deeds of all those who have worked tirelessly to make sure dogs and their owners have fair consideration.
“Each winner has gone above and beyond the call of duty to campaign for a fair deal for dog owners and promote responsible dog ownership in their local community. We thank them for helping us make a positive difference for dogs and their owners.”
